“Trondheim has cracked a problem that the rest of classical music has yet to face up to: half the faces in the audience are under 20. What can we learn from them? ”

Record-high number of applicants for Trondheim International Chamber Music Academy 2010
Trondheim International Chamber Music Academy is this year more international than ever. Among the 24 ensembles applying for the academy in September, there were musicians from 24 countries altogether. These are the chosen ensembles for the 2010 Academy.
Because of the high number of applicants the election of the four trios chosen to participate in the September Academy was a difficult task. The fact that there also were several previous prizewinners among the trios didn’t make it any easier - the level of all the applicants has been extremely high!
The election is now ready, and we look forward to welcome the following trios to Trondheim International Chamber Music Academy in September:
Dali Piano Trio (Frankrike/Latvia)
Trio L (Frankrike/Bulgaria)
Lichtental Trio (Østerrike)
Fournier Trio (Australia/Taiwan/UK/Korea)
In addition to these, Duo Nessuno, prizewinners from the Norwegian “Ungdommens Musikkmesterskap” will take part in the Academy.
The ensembles will receive coaching and Master classes as well as playing chamber music together with the instructors, who are:
Leif Ove Andsnes
Daniel Hope
Lawrence Power
Knut-Erik Sundquist
The Academy takes part as Trondheim Chamber Music Festival 2010, and the Academy’s showcase concert on Sunday 26 September is part of the festival’s programme.
One of the groups will be chosen to go straight on to the following years Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition, where they will be competing for attractive prizes and concert engagements.
We congratulate the chosen ensembles, and look forward to be able to follow their development through the Academy!

HK Gruber is Festival Composer 2010
Composer, conductor, chansonnier and double bass player HK Gruber is one of the most well-known and well-loved figures in contemporary music. HK Gruber is this year's festival composer at Trondheim Chamber Music Festival.
HK Gruber was born in Vienna 1943 and is a leading figure of the so-called 'Third Viennese School'. He is the composer of the celebrated 'pandemonium' Frankenstein!!, based on gruesome children’s rhymes by H.C. Artmann, which has received hundreds of performances and broadcasts worldwide. His music refracts the great Viennese tradition, both classical and popular, through contemporary lens, and draws on the cabaret style of the Weimar Republic, often combined with irreverent black humour. He is much admired for concertos including two violin concertos for Ernst Kovacic, a Cello Concerto for Yo-Yo Ma and a trumpet concerto Aerial for Håkan Hardenberger. Future works also include a new percussion concerto for Martin Grubinger (2010).
HK Gruber has appeared at many international festivals as featured composer, conductor, chansonnier, and music-theatre performer, including the 2006 Lucerne Festival. His works is recorded on the BIS, Chandos and Largo labels. HK Gruber is composer/conductor with BBC Philharmonic from Feb 2010.
HK Gruber will be present during the festival, and several of his works will be on the fesival programme. HK Gruber will also take part in the festival as conductor for Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and as performer of his own works.
Works by HK Gruber include:
Frankenstein!! (1977/79) for chansonnier and orchestra or ensemble
Cello Concerto (1989) for cello and ensemble (or small orchestra)
Aerial (1998-99) Concerto for trumpet and orchestra
"...the nostalgic frisson and the ironic surprise are technical means used by Gruber with absolute authority to create forthright masterpieces." — Sunday Times
